Whether you prefer to go sightseeing, take part in water sports or sunbathe, the second largest of the Caribbean Islands has something for you! Hiking and horse riding are popular ways to take in the scenery or why not try white water rafting and kayaking at El Yaque del Norte River and Bermudez National Park? 25 golf courses should provide plenty of choice for golfers. The less energetic traveller could take the cable car up Mt Isabel de Torres for spectacular views. On the north coast, Cabarete provides great conditions for windsurfing and kiteboarding.
Naturalists will enjoy watching humpback whales off the north-east coast – January to March being the time the whales return to Dominican waters to breed. In February, don’t miss La Vega Carnival – loud and colourful! June brings Cabarete Race Week (windsurfing, sailing, dancing and music). The Merengue Festival begins at the end of July and continues into August – a festival of dance.
